Every day, I hear many young men and women complain about lack of employment opportunities. This situation is worsened by the increasing strong competition in the labour market which seems to favour those with additional skills required in their industry. In this piece, the focus will be on the requirements for the choice of a fulfilling career. But before that, it will be necessary to say what a career is, and how to identify a fulfilling career.

CAREER. This is any chosen pursuit, profession or occupation which one does for a long period of time. On the other hand, it can be defined as anything (occupation) one does to earn a living or name (title) in the society. Examples include: Accountancy, Law, Engineering, Medicine, etc.

CHOICE OF A FULFILLING CAREER: The most important thing to consider in choosing a career is passion. It should be a profession or trade you love and derive satisfaction in. The profession or trade should meet about 70% of your personality. Some of the qualities of a fulfilling career include:

a) NOT STRESSFUL: A career is fulfilling if it does not stress you. This means that one is comfortable and derives satisfaction from it.

B) PROVISION OF EMPLOYMENT. A good career creates opportunities for employment. This could be a paid job or for self employment.

c) BRINGS OUT YOUR UNIQUE ABILITIES. Another quality of a fulfilling career is that it brings out one’s unique abilities, thereby giving the person confidence and the authority to take control in the chosen profession.

d) SUCCESS. A fulfilling career also makes a person successful. It promotes one to a level that others begin to emulate him, thereby making you a role model to everyone in that field.
